Why Trex Select?

25-Year Fade & Stain

The capped surface blocks UV, water, and food stains for 25 years - warrantied in writing by Trex.

No Staining, Ever

Unlike pressure-treated pine, Trex Select never needs stain, seal, or sand. Wash twice a year and call it done.

Mold-Resistant Core

The polymer-bonded core resists mold and mildew that grows in humid Charlotte summers on untreated wood decks.

Scalloped Back

Scalloped-bottom profile drops weight versus solid-back boards - gentler on framing and easier on install.

No Splinters

The capped surface stays smooth for the life of the board. Safe for bare feet, kids, and dogs.

Higher Resale

Composite decks are a documented value-add in Ballantyne, Waxhaw, and Weddington resale comps versus pine.

Frequently Asked

What is the difference between Trex Select and regular composite?

Trex Select is a scalloped-back capped composite board made from 95 percent recycled wood and plastic. The cap is a hard shell bonded around the core that blocks water, stains, and UV. Uncapped composite boards can still stain and fade - Select does not. The scalloped back saves weight and cost versus Trex Transcend, making Select the best-value capped composite in the Trex line.

How does Trex Select compare to pressure-treated over 25 years?

Trex Select costs about 50 percent more upfront than pressure-treated pine ($45/sqft vs $30/sqft installed). Over 25 years, pressure-treated needs staining every 2 to 3 years (roughly 8 to 12 stain cycles at $4/sqft each) and usually board replacement by year 15. Trex Select needs a soap-and-water wash twice a year and nothing else. Total cost of ownership is typically lower with Trex Select by year 10.

Does Trex Select get hot in Carolina summers?

Any dark deck surface in full sun gets hot. Trex Select in lighter colors (Pebble Grey, Winchester Grey, Madeira) stays roughly the same temperature as a stained pine deck. Darker colors (Saddle, Woodland Brown) run 10 to 15 degrees warmer in direct afternoon sun. If bare-feet comfort matters most, we usually recommend a light color or shading the deck with a pergola.

Can you mix Trex boards with pressure-treated framing?

Yes, and that is the standard build. Trex Select is a deck surface board only - it is not structural. We frame the deck with pressure-treated southern yellow pine (same lumber as a PT deck) and lay Trex Select as the walking surface. Joist spacing for Trex is 16 inches on center for perpendicular boards or 12 inches for diagonal patterns.

What does the 25-year warranty cover?

The Trex 25-Year Limited Residential Fade and Stain Warranty covers fading beyond a specific color-shift threshold and staining from common food and drink spills. Trex also offers a separate 25-year structural warranty against material defects like checking, splintering, or splitting. Both warranties transfer to a new homeowner once during the 25-year window. Our 2-year workmanship warranty covers the installation itself.
